William Howard Taft was Roosevelt's hand-picked successor. As he campaigned for the presidency in 1908, Taft was affable, likable, electable. In 1909, Taft became president and continued Roosevelt's crusade to make government more efficient and to break up big business monopolies. Yet Taft had his own style and failings.
